Kneale House

About this project

On a rear urban section in Rangiora this 4x bedroom, 3x bathroom home maximises every millimetre of its 294m2 footprint. Orientated to the north this home opens out to a generously proportioned outdoor entertaining zone through a series of large stacking sliders to a flat lawn where the occupants’ children frequently dominate their parents in football & cricket matches.

The central part of the home is a large open-plan living space with a pitched ceiling, entertainer’s kitchen, walk-in pantry, family room, dining space and study nook which all cleverly combine to form a ‘family-centric’ and multi-function hub. Off the main hub is the separate family room, complete with a gas fire that is built into a schist wall, and surrounded on 3 sides by aluminium glazing to create another light-filled space. The two living spaces open out onto a centralised hardwood deck & outdoor cooking zone providing optimal indoor, and outdoor flow between the spaces.

All-day sun, combined with a highly insulated envelope, wide exterior wall framing and thermally broken Low-E aluminium joinery, allows the home to maintain an even comfortable temperature throughout the year without the need for significant heating or cooling input.

An excellent example of a home which showcases the benefits of clever design, excellent craftmanship and well-thought-out product choices.
